Amelia M. Stanton, PhD (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Massachusetts and an Assistant Professor within the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University (BU). Dr. Stanton is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and she has extensive experience with exposure-based therapies. She also has specific expertise in treating sexual problems, working with LGBTQIA+ populations, and supporting adolescents/adults/couples through the gender affirmation process. Dr. Stanton received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. She completed her Pre-doctoral Clinical Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS). During her three-year postdoctoral fellowship at MGH/HMS, she developed and tested interventions to improve sexual health and wellbeing. She also worked with patients through MGH Psychiatry’s Gender Identity Program. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Stanton is actively engaged in research and training the next generation of clinical psychologists through her laboratory at BU. Dr. Stanton takes a collaborative, transparent, and goal-oriented approach to therapy. She provides evidence-based treatment for adolescents, adults, and couples. This includes treatment for sexual concerns (e.g., desire, arousal, pain); prolonged exposure for PTSD, with a focus on recovery from sexual trauma, and exposure for anxiety-related disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety, social anxiety, illness anxiety); exposure and response prevention for OCD; and modified treatments for co-occurring disorders (e.g., depression and PTSD). Dr. Stanton also has experience helping patients navigate complex medical diagnoses and periods of transition. In addition to therapy, Dr. Stanton also provides psychodiagnostic evaluations, which may help diagnose and clarify concerns regarding an individual's behavior, personality traits, mood, and emotional functioning. They are particularly useful in differentiating between multiple coexisting psychological disorders. Please note: this is NOT a neuropsychological evaluation and does not diagnose concerns such as learning disabilities, ADHD, or autism.
